In 2004, the Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Collaboration (NISMEC) was created through a partnership of eight Indiana school districts, the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Indiana University South Bend. The mission of NISMEC is to promote inquiry based science, mathematics, and engineering learning in northern Indiana. This collaboration has already led to a new Teacher Science Institute program that will train 130 Mishawaka elementary teachers in inquiry based methods over the next three years.
The Riverbend Community Math Center joined NISMEC as a partner organization in the fall of 2006. In June of 2007 and 2008, we worked with other NISMEC members to provide summer workshops on guided inquiry methods for middle school math and science teachers. NISMEC has also served as the official sponsor for our Math Academy program and the Summer 2008 Math Circle Teacher Training Institute co-organized with Bob and Ellen Kaplan of the Boston Math Circle. We continue to work with NISMEC to promote high quality math and science education in northern Indiana.
