Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Collaboration

The Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Collaboration (NISMEC) NISMEC was created through a partnership of eight Indiana school districts, the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Indiana University South Bend. The mission of NISMEC is to promote inquiry based science, mathematics, and engineering learning in northern Indiana. In 2004, this collaboration led to a three-year Teacher Science Institute program that trained 130 Mishawaka elementary teachers in inquiry based methods.

The Riverbend Community Math Center joined NISMEC as a partner organization in the fall of 2006. In June of 2007 and 2008, we worked with other NISMEC members to provide summer workshops on guided inquiry methods for middle school math and science teachers.

We served on the NISMEC planning committee for the Annual Next Steps in Math and Science Conference (held in April 2008 and April 2009) focusing on STEM education in our community.

NISMEC served as the official sponsor for the Math Circle Teacher Training Institutes co-organized with Bob and Ellen Kaplan of the Boston Math Circles from 2008 through 2016.
