Math Support for SBCSC Career and Technical Education

On a weekly basis, we offered math support for students in South Bend Community School Corporation's Culinary Arts, Culinary & Hospitality, and Building Trades Programs. In addition to helping to strengthen algebra and other math skills needed by students, we provided weekly hands-on activities designed to show the importance of math in daily life and to improve conceptual understanding of various math concepts. In addition to this work with students, we also led professional development workshops for the instructors of a wide range of Career and Technical Education courses.
Veritas Academy Consulting and Professional Development

During this semester, we provided math professional development for Veritas Academy teachers. During the semester, we provided weekly consultations and classroom demonstrations for K-8 teachers.
South Bend Community School Corporation Consulting and Professional Development

Working with administrators, curriculum leaders, and teachers, we identified ways to strengthen math instruction for students at Primary, Intermediate, and High School Centers in South Bend. During this semester, we led professional development sessions to deepen the pedagogical content knowledge of teachers at the 3rd grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, and high school level. We also worked with several schools to work towards the goal of teaching for mastery.

Working with administrators and teachers, Amanda Serenevy assisted with professional development workshops supporting the implementation of a new math program for high-ability students in Kindergarten through 6th grades at all seven elementary schools.
Science Alive -- Motion Detector Challenges

Columbia City Schools Consulting and Professional Development

As a follow-up to workshops provided during the summer and fall of 2012, Riverbend math consultant Cheryl Nix led a math professional development session for Columbia City Schools on problem solving in high school math classrooms.
Integrating Math and Literacy Into Science Instruction

Staff members from Riverbend Community Math Center worked with three local teachers to present a two-week summer workshop sponsored by the Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Consortium. 5th and 6th grade teachers from South Bend Community School Corporation worked through two FOSS Science Kits used at their grade levels: "Human Body" and "Floating and Sinking" for 5th grade teachers, and "Force and Motion" and "Mixtures and Solutions" for 6th grade teachers. Riverbend staff members showed how to incorporate math topics such as proportional reasoning, fractions, measurement, unit conversion, surface area and volume, data analysis, linear functions, and velocity and acceleration.
Math Circle Institute

Teachers and mathematicians from around the country participated in a week-long workshop led by Bob and Ellen Kaplan. Participants experienced Math Circles as participants, discussed pedagogical and logistical questions about leading a Math Circle, and designed and led Math Circle sessions for students attending each afternoon.
School City of Mishawaka Math Institute

During this one-day Math Institute for K-12 teachers from the School City of Mishawaka, Riverbend staff members presented sessions on a variety of topics including project based learning, guided inquiry in the mathematics classroom, Common Core State Standards, incorporating technology into math instruction, Number Talks, and Rich Tasks.

Notre Dame TRIO Math Circle

During the fall semester, Andrea Vollrath led weekly math circles for high school students in Notre Dame's TRIO Upward Bound program. Guest speakers from the Notre Dame department of mathematics included faculty members Alex Hahn, Jeffrey Diller, Peter Cholak, and graduate student Benjamin Lewis. Students met for one hour each Wednesday evening and explored a variety of mathematics topics not ordinarily encountered in high school math classes.
