Integrating Math and Literacy Into Science Instruction
Jun 17, 2013 – Jun 28, 2013
Staff members from Riverbend Community Math Center worked with three local teachers to present a two-week summer workshop sponsored by the Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Consortium. 5th and 6th grade teachers from South Bend Community School Corporation worked through two FOSS Science Kits used at their grade levels: "Human Body" and "Floating and Sinking" for 5th grade teachers, and "Force and Motion" and "Mixtures and Solutions" for 6th grade teachers. Riverbend staff members showed how to incorporate math topics such as proportional reasoning, fractions, measurement, unit conversion, surface area and volume, data analysis, linear functions, and velocity and acceleration.
