Math Support for SBCSC Career and Technical Education

On a weekly basis, we offered math support for students in South Bend Community School Corporation's Entrepreneurship, Welding, and Building Trades Programs. In addition to helping to strengthen algebra and other math skills needed by students, we provided weekly hands-on activities designed to show the importance of math in daily life and to improve conceptual understanding of various math concepts. In addition to this work with students, we also led professional development workshops for the instructors of a wide range of Career and Technical Education courses.
Science Enrichment at Hebrew Day School

Mobile Math Circle -- Orbit-Stabilizer Theorem

Amanda traveled to the University of South Alabama to present to the Mobile Math Circle. Approximately 70 middle school and high school students participated in a hands-on session about the Orbit-Stabilizer Theorem. Students used pipe cleaners to construct cubes and squares with a white or black pony bead at each vertex. We used these objects to investigate the symmetries of each shape, to consider which symmetries fix which colorings, and to ultimately determine how many different colorings are possible.
Private and Charter School Consulting and Professional Development

Working with administrators, curriculum leaders, and teachers, we identified ways to strengthen math instruction for K-12 students at Veritas Academy, Mishawaka Catholic Schools, St. Adalbert's School, Career Academy and Success Academy. We also worked remotely with Notre Dame Trustey Family STEM Teaching Fellows from Catholic schools around the country. Sixteen middle school math teachers submitted videos of lessons they led and received written feedback from our staff members.
Tutoring and Mentoring Students

We met with several students and teachers during the semester on an individual basis. In some cases, we provided independent study guidance for advanced coursework for students. We also met individually with students who are struggling with math coursework in school.
Math Circle Sessions at MathFest

During MathFest in Washington D.C., Amanda supported the National Association of Math Circles by staffing the booth and teaching participants how to construct origami polyhedra.

Changes in Mathematics Education Talk For Mishawaka Kiwanis

Amanda presented a talk on changes in mathematics education for members of the Mishawaka Kiwanis Club during their breakfast meeting. The talk included a discussion of reasons for changing educational philosophies encapsulated in the new math standards, and was followed by a question and answer session from the audience.

Navajo Nation Math Circle Mentoring

During the fall, Amanda met over the phone with upper elementary teachers at Tsehootsooi Middle School. We reviewed approaches to fractions and prepared teachers to coordinate a Math Wrangle on fraction problems for their students.
National Association of Math Circles Training Workshop

During a mentoring workshop for new Math Circle leaders, Amanda led a demonstration session on cultivating mathematical creativity for the Rocky Mountain Math Teachers' Circle, which was observed by new Math Circle leaders participating in the training workshop.
Career and Technical Education Conference

Amanda presented to Career and Technical Education instructors and coordinators from around Indiana during a CTE Education Conference in Indianapolis. During the session, Amanda shared the initatives we have led in partnership with the South Bend Community School Corporation Career and Technical Education program.
Linear Algebra Study Group

During the fall semester, Amanda participated in a Linear Algebra study group along with three Math Circle instructors from around the country. The group reviewed Linear Algebra to obtain a deeper understanding of the subject and to prepare for future Math Circles on this topic.
Origami for Children at Memorial Hospital
